About

Meet Ella Echo

Sophia Goodwin (also known by her professional alias, Ella Echo) is an emerging multidisciplinary artist and designer, specialising in audio-visual design. She is fascinated by the concepts of multi-sensory experiences and 'art you can walk into', particularly in the form of large-scale immersive installations.

Many of Sophia’s works centre around the complex nature of human emotion. Her experience of growing up introverted, neurodivergent, and queer, offers her a unique perspective on the messiness and beauty of human connection, and the ways in which we feel. A lifetime of learning to read people has lead her to deeply value openness and authenticity, and a desire to explore emotion by evoking it in others through her works, which often explore multi-faceted concepts such as memory, nostalgia, isolation, emptiness, love, and interpersonal relationships. In capturing these feelings through music, she takes great inspiration from the ambient works of Brian Eno and the lush, heavily textural sound worlds of rock band The War On Drugs.

In cultivating her visual style, Sophia takes much inspiration from her synaesthesia - a phenomenon which causes her to involuntarily visualise colours and patterns in response to hearing music. In the creative process of pairing dynamic visuals with music, she often refers to her own visualisations as the starting point. She prefers to take an experimental approach to creation, guided by her intuition rather than a clear plan, and following a cyclical, iterative process of trial and feedback (we don’t believe in “error” here).

Alongside her audio-visual and design work, Sophia is also a classically-trained violinist with over 18 years of playing experience. Originally pursuing a career as a orchestral musician, she eventually chose to leave the professional industry, compelled by the lack of room for creative freedom and expression and the culture of elitism, both of which went against her creative values. By creating her own music and opening up visual and digital art to be experienced in an intimately sensory way, Sophia strives to make her artworks accessible to people from all walks of life, no matter their background.

Sophia still remains active in the semi-professional music scene, freelancing as a professional violinist, and frequently performing in local community orchestras.
